Eubanks & Davey Named Lance Vermeil Scholarship Award Winners

Taryn Eubanks of Dallas Baptist University (DBU) and Joseph Davey of the University of Wyoming were named recipients of the 2018 Lance Vermeil Scholarship Award at the CSCCa Annual National Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. The award is presented to young strength and conditioning coaches who’ve shown a commitment to having a career in the field, and have demonstrated tremendous potential and inclination for this unique profession.

The Lance Vermeil Award was established in 2012 and was developed in partnership with MF Athletic/Perform Better in memory of Lance Vermeil, who was an extremely qualified and dedicated young strength and conditioning coach. Coach Vermeil was committed to the profession of collegiate strength and conditioning, and most importantly, to serving and protecting the student-athlete. This was the first year the award was presented to two candidates, recognizing both a male and female coach for their hard work and dedication.

Coach Eubanks has previous internships with both Colorado Mesa University and Metro State University strength and conditioning departments. She has worked in both high school and private weight rooms, and has worked with multiple sports including hockey, football, golf, softball, cross-country, men’s and women’s basketball and more. She currently trains both the cheer and dance teams at DBU, as well as assisting with men’s soccer, women’s tennis, volleyball and basketball.

Eubanks earned her bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University with a concentration in sports conditioning and a minor in coaching and psychology. She is currently working towards her master’s degree in kinesiology at DBU.

“Being a father myself, I understand the love a father has for his son and can only try to understand how much this award means to Coach Vermeil and his family,” DBU director of athletic performance, Dave Trevino says. “I only wanted to nominate a staff member that truly fit the description of the award. I think Taryn fits that description, and I know she was blown away to be chosen for such a prestigious award.

“Taryn finds it very motivating and quite honestly somewhat of a challenge to fulfill the obligation that comes with receiving this award, and that’s how it should be. It’s an honor. To whom much is given, much is expected, and that goes for everyone in DBU Athletic Performance. We all carry the weight of being associated with this award.”

Coach Davey is currently a graduate assistant sports performance coach at the University of Wyoming. Prior to becoming a GA at Wyoming, Davey was an undergraduate student intern for three years at Xavier University, where he directed the strength and conditioning program for men’s and women’s track and field while assisting with all other sports. In addition to his time spent at Xavier, he has completed internships at Marquette University and at the University of Iowa.

Davey earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Xavier University in May of 2017, and also earned his SCCC certification in the same year.

“Joey is routinely recognized by the Strength Staff, Athletes, and Coaches as being outstanding in leadership roles, attentive to details, plus reliable and friendly in the work place,” Matt Jennings, head strength and conditioning coach at Xavier University says. “Most importantly, he is exceptionally effective in working and communicating with the athletes, coaches, and staff who use the resources of the strength and conditioning facility.

“His daily devotion to the field of strength and conditioning, his passion for service to others, his long-term commitment to our profession and his care for the student-athletes is both inspiring and motivating.”

Al Vermeil, the father of Lance and a 2007 Legend in the Field of Strength and Conditioning, presented the recipients with the award at the Master Strength and Conditioning Coaches Dinner and Ceremony on Thursday, May 10. This year, the award was also sponsored by Eleiko Sport Inc., a CSCCa Platinum Sponsor, and official provider of all bars and bumper plates used in the SCCC Certification Exam.
